Product Description

Why you should be concerned about the harsh chemicals in synthetic hair colours

Looking for a clean, toxin and synthetic free, and completely natural way to colour your hair? Are you delaying your root touch up to avoid harsh chemicals? Are you worried about the impact of hair colouring on your body / unborn child?

Synthetic hair colours ARE worrisome. They have been implicated in a whole host of disorders including non Hodgkins lymphoma, bladder cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, contact dermatitis and accelerated development of cataracts. Even if you have experienced none of the above, what you would have experienced is dry, rough and damaged hair with high hairfall and poor hair growth with repeated hair colouring.

Krya Natural Black hair colour : a 100% natural hair colour with ayurvedic hair herbs

This natural herbal hair colour powder suits all hair types and is formulated to give a soft, natural black colour. It is made from Ayurvedic hair herbs including organic Indigo, organic natural Henna from Rajasthan, Ratanjot, forest collected Manjishta and other Ayurvedic herbs. A full listing of ingredients can be found in our ingredients tab.

This is a semi permanent shade that dyes the hair cuticle and does not penetrate the hair shaft or the cortex. Our testing indicates that the colour gradually fades anytime between 2 – 4 weeks depending upon how fast your hair grows and how often you shampoo your hair.

Preparing your hair for colour:

The Krya Single Step Indigo based Hair Colour should be applied only on clean, washed hair . Prep your hair on the day of application, first , oil & wash your hair with the correct Krya hair care products .

Using gentle natural hair products like ours will ensure that the hair is clean and smooth for natural dye appliation. After dye application it also helps maintain the colour longer.

Mixing the Indigo hair dye correctly:
Make a thick paste of the Krya single step Indigo based hair colour in water. Mix until you get a smooth, lump free, non drippy paste.

A good Indigo based hair dye will start releasing dye pigments within 20 minutes of mixing with water. you should see an iridescent colour pattern forming with prominent blue purple shade

Applying the Indigo Hair dye correctly:
Apply within 20 minutes of mixing the colour, apply hair colour paste thoroughly on hair , section by section. Use a Dye brush to colour your hair as the dye will stain skin.

Apply the colour paste as a thick coating onto hair. Use a thicker coating on small fine baby hair and greys. Ensure you spread and section the hair as much as possible for better grey coverage.

Waiting for the Hair dye to colour hair:
After completely covering the hair with the hair colour paste, leave it on for 1-2 hours. Wrap the hair with a shower cap and ensure you sit in a draught free environment. Avoid sitting with the AC on or in a windy place at this time.

For the colour to latch properly onto hair, the colour paste has to be moist for as long as possible. Therefore if you leave your hair uncovered, or sit in a windy place or in the AC, it can dry out the moisture in the colour paste interfering with the dye process.

At the end of 2 hours, mix the Krya creamy colour-strengthening mask and keep it ready for the next part of the process.

Rinsing out the Natural hair colour
After 2 hours, rinse out the colour paste thoroughly from hair using plain water at room temperature. Make sure you work the scalp thoroughly to remove any remnants of the paste. Use only room temperature water to clean the hair and scalp.

The colour will take 1-2 days to fully develop, as the herbs go through an oxidation process after application.

Applying the Krya colour strengthening Hair mask:

Apply this hair mask, 24-48 hours after the coloring session

After thoroughly working the scalp, apply the Krya colour-strengthening hair mask paste. This product helps bond the colour pigments better onto hir, cleans the scalp and smoothens and naturally conditions hair. Apply in sections on the hair (follow the package instructions). Leave it on the hair for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes rinse out this mask thoroughly from hair. T

he Krya hair colouring process is now complete.

How to mix the indigo hair dye?

We’ve answered this question in detail in our “how to use” tab below.

What colour is indigo hair dye?

Depending upon what herbs are mixed along with Indigo, we can get varying shades from brown colour to black. On its own Indigo gives a purplish blue shade. It does not latch onto hair without the presence of herbs like Henna, so Indigo alone will not work as a natural hair dye.

Is indigo permanent hair color?

Indigo gives a semi-permanent shade when used along with Herbs like Henna, Amla, Khadira, Manjishta etc. It gradually fades over time with every wash and needs to be reapplied.

How to make indigo hair dye last longer?

Natural dyes fade faster compared to chemical dyes as they deposit on the surface of hair. To retain clour longer, we suggest oiling the hair regularly, and avoiding any practices that damages the hair cuticle like using heat, chemical shampoos, brushes and blow drying hair regularly.

Is indigo dye good for hair?

This combination of herbs we make the Krya hair colours with is good for hair.

How long should i leave indigo dye on my hair?

Indigo dyes can be left on for 1 – 2 hours on the hair. Leaving an indigo based hair colour is not recommended overnight.

Can you use indigo alone to dye hair?

Indigo alone cannot be used on hair as it does not bind properly to the dye receptors in hair. Henna and herbs like Amla, Manjishta and Khadira are needed to bond with Indigo and help transfer its dyeing molecules onto hair.

Can indigo dye hair blue?

Indigo dye has a blueish purple colour. It needs herbs like Henna to bind well to hair. When we add these herbs they bring down the pruplish tones of indigo. When these dye pigments attach to hair and coat it you might at best get a shade of black with purple or blue tint . But you will not get a blue hair colour.

How to apply indigo hair dye?

We’ve answered this question in detail in our “how to use” tab below.

Is indigo hair dye safe for pregnancy?

The Krya hair colour range is extremely safe for pregnant and breastfeeding moms. However please read the next point aout rashes and allergic reactions. Please do a pach test before usig our rpoduct or any Indigo hair dye.

Is indigo hair dye safe to use?

5% of the population have a natural allergy towards Indigo. This reaction is lesser in blended products like what Krya makes as we use a variety of herbs along with Indigo. But to be safe and rule this out, we recomed always doing a patch test before using any Indigo based hair dye.

Can I use Henna and Indigo powder on chemically treated hair?

Yes absolultely. However, it may take a while before you see good results as typically chemically treated hair is damaged and the cuticular structure has many gaps. As Henna and Indigo powder are semi permanent natural dyes that attach to the outer cuticular surface of hair, if there is damage in this part, the colour will not latch on properly.

Can I use Indigo Hair Dye to colour hair black without Henna?

This has already been answered above. It is not possible to achieve a stable hair colour without Henna and other herbs, using Indigo powder alone.

Does it help to treat grey and white hairs ?

Indigo and other herbs are excellent to provide a natural dark coverage to grey and white hair. However premature greying is linked to aggravated Pitta dosha in the body. To work on this, we suggest following a pitta balancing diet and using our Pitta balancing hair care range .

How much organic indigo powder do you need to dye your hair?

This depends upon the natural length of your hir. For short hair, half of our standard package (100 gm) is sufficient . For medium or very thick medium hair, you may need a little over 100 gm. For long hair, 200 gm pack is required.

Is it better to use a natural hair dye?

Yes! Chemical dyes are notorously bad for health and their long term use has been implicated in many worrying serious health conditions. They have a strong allergic potential and can trigger many symptoms like skin disorders, serious difficulty in breathing, skin allergies etc. They also impair hair growth over time and damage the scalp. Pleae read more about this here and here.

Is it suitable for a 16 year old boy for grey hair ?

Yes. Please ensure a patch test is done before use.

Is the Krya natural hair dye range chemical free ?

Yes!! Every single product we make at Krya is 100% natural and 100% chemical free. We declare 100% of the ingredients that go into every product we make. Please check the “Ingredients” tab to know what goes into each Krya hair colour.

Many people who have suffered PPD based allergic reaction after usng chemical hair dyes use Krya’s range of natural hair colour. Some customers come to us after recommendation from their Doctors too.

A good ayurvedic hair care routine is not just to retain colour on hair but also to maintain its health and stimulate good hair growth.

Please follow this hair care routine that promotes hair health, retains natural colour and improves scalp health :

  • Oil the scalp 2-3 times a week and leave the oil on. Use 1/4 tsp or less of the ayurvedic hair oil . This promotes scalp health and nourishes hair.
  • Restrict Hair wash to twice a week using only an Ayurvedic hair wash choornam. From the Krya range, you can use any of our Hair wash choornams
  • Before washing the hair, oil the hair strands generously with the Ayurvedic hair oil – this protects hair and the colour from fast fading
  • Hair Lepa (Mask) – once a week – an Ayurvedic hair Lepa once a week improves scalp health and leaves your hair looking vibrant

How did we formulate this 100% natural hair dye?

We tested nearly 53 shades of natural colours, until we developed our final 3 Indigo based single step colours.

Our challenge was 2 fold:

  • Develop a safe ayurvedic hair colour which gave a close to natural black shade
  • Create a formula without any extracts or shortcuts like coffee, tea etc. We wanted to use only herbs that were approved for use in Ayurveda on the scalp and which would not aggravate Pitta as substances like coffee and tea do.

We worked on this formula by researching safe ayurvedic hair colours and testing these combinatiosn on actual Indian human hair to understand how the dye transfers, how long it stays etc.

What is in / out of this natural colour?

We make Krya’s hair colour products only from whole Ayurvedic herbs. Many products that claim to be natural like certain varieties of “black henna”, “natural henna” , and “ammonia free hair color” can contain trace amounts of PPD to give quicker and stronger black dye colour. This is why we completely avoid using any extracts or powders when we manufacture our hair colours to avoid any kind of chemical contamination.

Each Krya hair colour formula contains between 6-12 Ayurvedic herbs. Each herb is cleaned, sorted , processed separately as per classical Ayurvedic manufacturing technique and then blended in a precise formula.

The product does not contain harsh chemicals like Ammonia, PPD , Resorcinol, tetrahydro-6-nitroquinoxaline, Eugenol, Coal Tar, Formaldehyde, DMDM Hydantoin, Eugenol, or ANY SYNTHETIC CHEMICAL.

Krya’s hair colours are also free from metallic salts . The product is vegan and cruelty free as are all of Krya’s products.

Will I get an exact shade of black hair or black hair color?

Synthetic hair dyes give you an even shade by first bleaching out all existing colour from your hair and then adding the synthetic colour to your hair. This is why the colour you get after a synthetic hair colour / dye is even and the same shade is present throughout your hair.

A natural hair colour simply coats your existing hair with the shade you have chosen. The dye uptake varies depending upon the grey percentage in your hair and how your individual hair strands react to the herbs in the hair colour.

So while we have tested the hair colour on human hair swatches, you can expect slight variations in the colour on your hair. We do not expect these variations to be too different from the hair colour we have achieved. Also, depending upon the grey percentage in your hair, you can see variations in the colour across your hair.

Will my grey hair get a natural black colour with this herbal hair colour?

Grey hair is tougher to colour compared to black hair. Black or dark hair tends to take on the colour much like highlights or tints. But initially grey hair may take on an orange or dark brown shade instead of the natural black shade.

Why are greys trickier to get full colour coverage?  This is because our hair colour is made up purely of natural ingredients and does not contain even trace amounts of PPD, etc which can quickly cover even greys very perfectly.

With repeated applications, the grey coverage is better. As the dye coats over the existing previous coats of colour , we get a darker and richer shade.

For extremely dye resistant greys or very high percentage of greys – above 60%, we recommend our 2 step natural hair colour Dwii.
